BriizPay for WooCommerce

Setting up BriizPay in WooCommerce

About ten minutes, most of it waiting for your business checks. You will not need to touch any code.

  1. 1

    Create a BriizPay account

Sign up and complete the checks on your business. You need an approved company and a bank account on file before you can take a payment, so start here rather than with the plugin. To try it first, sign up on the sandbox at sandbox.app.briizpay.com instead. It is the same product with test data, the checks on your business are approved automatically so you are not waiting on us, and no real money moves. A sandbox key starts bzp_sk_sandbox_ and the plugin sends it to the sandbox on its own, so there is no second setting to get wrong.

  2. 2

    Install the plugin

Download the plugin, then in WordPress go to Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin, choose the file and activate it. To update later, upload the new download the same way and choose Replace current with uploaded. Your settings stay as they are.

  3. 3

    Connect your shop in BriizPay

In BriizPay open Integrations, choose WooCommerce, and enter your shop's web address. It creates your API key and tells us where to send payment notifications.

  4. 4

Paste the two values into WooCommerce

In WordPress go to WooCommerce, Settings, Payments, BriizPay. Paste the API key into the field named API key, and the signing secret into Webhook signing secret. Tick Enable BriizPay and save. Logos of the UK's biggest banks (Barclays, HSBC, NatWest and Monzo) show beside the method at checkout, so customers can see at a glance that they pay from their own bank. They are on by default; if your theme already decorates payment methods, untick Show bank logos at checkout.

  5. 5

    Place a test order

Put something cheap in your basket, choose BriizPay - Pay by bank and place the order. You go straight to choosing your bank. The order should move to Processing on its own within a second or two of you approving the payment in your banking app. On the sandbox you can do this as often as you like. On a live shop this is a real payment to your own bank account, so keep the basket small.

  6. 6

Give customers a reason to pick it

A card is a habit, so most shoppers will not choose pay by bank unless it saves them something. On the same settings page, tick Offer a discount for paying by bank and set a percentage or a fixed amount. The method then reads 'BriizPay - Pay by bank and save £1.20' at checkout with the saving worked out for that basket, and the discount appears as its own line on the order. A card typically costs you 1.5% + 20p and BriizPay 0.5%, so from about £40 a basket the card fee you save pays for a 0.5% discount.

The two secrets are shown once

We keep only a hash of the API key, and neither value is ever displayed again, so nobody can show them to you later, including us. Copy both into WooCommerce before you leave the page. If you lose one, connect your shop again for a fresh pair and revoke the old key.

When something is not right

The method disappeared after I pasted a sandbox key

Plugin versions before 1.2.0 only recognise live and test keys, so a key starting bzp_sk_sandbox_ reads as invalid and the gateway hides itself. Upload the current download over the top, choosing Replace current with uploaded. Your settings stay as they are.

There are no payment methods available at checkout

The gateway hides itself rather than failing at the last step, and it does that in three cases: your store currency is not GBP, no API key is set, or the method is not enabled. BriizPay settles to a UK bank account, so a store priced in dollars or euros cannot use it.

The order stays on hold instead of processing

The plugin checks the amount it is told against your order total, and holds the order rather than marking it paid if they do not match. That should not happen, and a human looking at it is better than a wrong order marked paid. Check the order notes: they name both figures.

The customer paid but the order did not update

Open Integrations, WooCommerce in BriizPay and look at the recent notifications. It shows whether we tried and what your shop said back, which separates 'we never sent it' from 'your shop refused it'. We retry on a backoff, so a shop that was briefly down will catch up on its own.

It says the signature is invalid

The signing secret in WooCommerce does not match the one BriizPay is signing with. Connect your shop again in BriizPay to get a fresh pair, and paste both into the plugin. The secret is shown once and cannot be recovered afterwards.

My shop is on a local address or behind a login

We cannot send payment notifications to a site only you can reach, which includes anything on localhost or a staging site behind HTTP authentication. Use a publicly reachable https address.
